Beef
Raise the bar with quality British beef
British beef is not just a product, it’s a testament to heritage, quality and unparalleled flavour that stands out in the market.
Excellence in beef production
The United Kingdom (UK) has a mild and wet climate, which is perfect for the growing of grass for ruminant production. Beef cattle are reared in a green, nutrient-rich environment. Grazing livestock is treated as a science in the UK, with the objective of optimising the production of quality beef from natural, nutritious grass.
British beef is renowned worldwide for its production standards, ensuring each cut meets the highest levels of quality and safety. The UK beef industry’s commitment to excellence is reflected in several key aspects:
Grass-fed
The UK’s unique climate allows for optimal grass growth, providing cattle with a rich, natural diet. Cattle and sheep in the UK are primarily fed on grass. In fact, grass-derived feed amounts to 91% of the diet of UK beef cattle, which comprises of fresh grass (74%) and conserved grass (17%), such as from hay, straw and silage.
Outdoor-reared
Due to the UK’s climate and landscape, red meat production systems in the UK are predominantly outdoor, land-based systems. A total of 96% of cattle are fully outdoors or in a mix of housed and outdoor-grazed systems, allowing the cows spend time grazing in their natural habitat.
Environmental responsibility
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from UK beef are about half the global average, according to data from the University of Oxford (Poore and Nemecek) and life cycle assessments from AHDB. British farmers achieve this through considered farming practices, such as integrating grasslands with livestock grazing, which enhances biodiversity and facilitates carbon sequestration.
