Beef cattle and sheep in the UK are primarily fed on grass. As ruminants, they convert plant material that is indigestible to humans into nutrient-dense food and readily available micronutrients. This ensures land used for food production is maximised.

Grass-derived feed amounts to 91% of the diet of UK beef cattle (74% from fresh grass and 17% from conserved grass, such as from hay, straw and silage). Similarly, the diet of UK sheep consists of 90% grass-derived feed (60% from fresh grass and 30% from conserved grass) and the remainder consists of other coproducts/forages.
